What Are Driers?

  • Driers are metallic soaps
  • Formed by reaction of metal salt & organic acid
    • Metal is the active component
    • The organic radical ensures driers solubility in resin or oil and determines the maximum metal percentage of the drier.
  • Organic acids used: naphthenic, 2-ethyl hexanoic acid, neodecanoic
  • Metals mainly: Co,Mn,Zr,Ca,Cu,Zn,Sr…

Uses Of Driers

  • Accelerate drying of paint.
    • Without driers paint would take an unacceptably long period to dry >24 hrs.
  • Other functions:
  • Lubricant additives, grinding aids, fuel, additives, PVC stabilisers, vinyl, chloride stabilisers, grease additives, fungicides.
