Paint Driers

A dryer works by catalyzing or accelerating the curing and hardening of oil paint. Often, they are based on metals, and are sometimes called metal soaps or salts. In the process of drying, oil-based paints first absorb oxygen, then they form peroxide which decomposes. Driers accelerate this process.

There are three general categories of driers, classified according to process:

  • Oxidisers – Since the surface of paint is exposed to the air, these driers are most active on the surface of the paint. They include cobalt, manganese, vanadium, cerium and iron.
  • Polymerizers – promote drying internally to the paint. They include zirconium, lanthanum, neodymium, aluminum, bismuth, strontium, and barium.
  • Auxiliaries – secondary additives that help with the “wetting” of the pigment, a necessary part of the paint making process where pigments are prepared to accept oil. These include calcium, potassium, lithium, and zync.

 

A short summary of drier catalysts:

  • Cobalt – the fastest, most active drier. Can cause wrinkling and color changes in light-colored paints.
  • Manganese – also very fast, but has a dark color which makes it questionable for use.
  • Iron – promotes rapid drying by polymerization. High content of iron in iron oxide colors accounts for their rapid drying time.
  • Rare Earth – useful under conditions of high humidity or low temperatures.
  • Lithium – sometimes added to other driers, most often alkyds.
  • Calcium – Performs well overall, often added during the pigment grinding process as an auxiliary dispersant. Basically marble dust.
  • Zirconium – Used with calcium as a replacement for lead. Has better gloss and color retention than lead, but may not do well under high humidity or low temperature.
  • Aluminum – Great polymerization and yellowing resistance without negatively affecting viscosity. Probably the number one drier in overall usage today in the form of aluminum stearate.

PVC STABILIZER- Solid and Liquid

1)    Lubricated one pack stabilizers:

These products are mainly recommended for extrusion of rigid pipes, pressure & non pressure pipes, casing & capping etc. These are well balanced complex lead stabilizers with internal and external lubricants. Non lubricated one pack stabilizer:

Non lubricated one pack systems are high performance stabilizer, mainly used in the formulations of rigid PVC pipes, conduits, suction pipes, casing and capping. Non lubricated one packs has been specially designed for providing optimum performance on twin screw extruders.

2)  Commodity Stabilizers:

Commodity stabilizers are used as heat stabilizer in the PVC formulation. It can be heated to high temperatures without decomposition. These are non dusting powder forms which helps the PVC in the extrusion process. These stabilizers are mainly recommended for rigid PVC pipes, profiles, cables, reinforced suction hoses, sheets, tubings and also for PVC compounds etc.

3)  Mixed Metals Liquid Stabilizers:

Liquid mixed metal stabilizers are complex stabilizers known for their easy dispersion properties in the compounding formulations. It is known as the best source for their clarity and depth of colour to the finished product. These products are mainly used for calendaring, extrusion, injection moulding and plastisols coating industries for flexible PVC applications. These mixed metals are containing the metals like barium/cadmium and lead which are the best sources of heat stability.

4)  Calcium Co precipitate:

Calcium Co precipitate also known as Calcium stearates are widely used as an internal lubricant and as a co-stabilizer in the PVC formulations.

Calcium Stearate

  • Calcium percent: 6.5 to 7
  • Percent Volatile Matter @ 105 Degree C for 2 hrs: 0.1 max.
  • Free fatty acid: 1 max.

Calcium co precipitate is used as a flow agent in powders including some tubes, a waterproofing agent for fabrics, a lubricant in pencil and crayons. In plastics, it can act as an acid scavenger, a lubricant and release agent. It may be used in plastic colorant concentrates to improve pigment wetting. In rigid PVC, it can accelerate fusion, improve flow properties and reduce die swell.
